In der Sendung 10 Jahre Google an der Börse auf SF2 ist ein Interview mit mir zu hören. Es geht vor allem darum, was es bedeutet, wenn Menschen immer häufiger als Datensatz verstanden werden.

Am 10.7.2014 nehme ich an der Abschlussdiskussion des Colloquium Fundamentale in Karlsruhe teil. Die Veranstaltung steht unter dem Titel Die digitale Wissensgesellschaft – Quo vadis?. Auch die Vorträge des Colloquiums zum Thema “Digitale Revolution: Technik verstehen und gestalten?” versprechen spannend zu werden.
My new paper “Why privacy is not enough privacy in the context of ‘ubiquitous computing’ and ‘big data'” is online and will appear in print in the Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society Vol. 12 Issue 2 later this year.
I disucss some of the new challenges that new technologies pose to prevailing concepts of privacy. In particular I argue that concepts of privacy that just focus on the relation of a single person and data about that person cannot grasp some of the most important issues. Thus we need a decidedly social and political perspective on privacy. I develop these thoughts in a critical discussion of Helen Nissenbaum’s concept of privacy as contextual integrity.
Neulich ist der von Matthias Maring herausgegebene Band Bereichsethiken im interdisziplinären Dialog erschienen, der bei KIT Scientific Publishing auch als E-Book zu haben ist. Dafür habe ich mit meine ehemaligen Kollegen Michael Nagenborg und Heiner Koch einen Artikel über Sicherheitsethik geschrieben.

Heute (oder genauer gesagt morgen) von Mitternacht bis 3 Uhr bin ich bei der “Langen Nacht der Hacker” auf Deutschlandfunk dabei. Die Sendung wird live übertragen vom 30c3, mit dabei sind Constanze Kurz und Andi Müller-Maghun.
Morgen fahre ich nach Würzburg und halte dort auf Einladung des Instituts für Mathematik einen Vortrag zum Thema “Technik, Moral … und Politik”. Finde ich super und freu mich drauf!
My new paper has been published in AI & Society.
Here’s the abstract:
The use of cognitive systems like pattern recognition or video tracking technology in security applications is becoming ever more common. The paper considers cases in which the cognitive systems are meant to assist human tasks by providing information, but the final decision is left to the human. All these systems and their various applications have a common feature: an intrinsic difference in how a situation or an event is assessed by a human being and a cognitive system. This difference, which here is named “the model gap,” is analyzed pertaining to its epistemic role and its ethical consequences. The main results are as follows: (1) The model gap is not a problem, which might be solved by future research, but the central feature of cognitive systems. (2) The model gap appears on two levels: the aspects of the world, which are evaluated, and the way they are processed. This leads to changes in central concepts. While differences on the first level often are the very reason for the deployment of cognitive systems, the latter is hard to notice and often goes unreflected. (3) Such a missing reflection is ethically problematic because the human is meant to give the final judgment. It is particularly problematic in security applications where it might lead to a conflation of descriptive and normative concepts. (4) The idea of the human operator having the last word is based on an assumption of independent judgment. This assumption is flawed for two reasons: The cognitive system and the human operators form a “hybrid system” the components of which cannot be assessed independently; and additional modes of judgment might pose new ethical problems.
Mein Forschungsschwerpunkt am IZEW in Tübingen hat einen Sammelband zum Thema Sicherheitsethik erstellt, der heute erscheint. Das Thema wird von vielen Perspektiven betrachtet. Von mir findet sich darin ein Beitrag zum Thema Sicherheit und Demokratie.
